The Winter's Tale
'John Dove's simply staged traverse production has the rough and ready energy of a company of strolling players who have just turned up to do a show... No mistaking the frantic fury of John Dougall's misguided king, or the emotional intensity of Sasha Hails' wronged Hermione... There are moments when you taste the play afresh' The Guardian
'Excellent... A superb Sasha Hails... As per tradition, men also play the role of women and none better than Michael Benz as Paulina' Northern Echo
'Sasha Hails emerges as a lovely, fragile yet indestructible Hermione' The Scotsman
'Classy performance at Woburn from The Globe... Passion and energy enthralled the first night crowd... A world class performance from the entire cast' Leighton Buzzard Citizen
After last year’s production of Romeo and Juliet, the world renowned Shakespeare’s Globe takes to the road again, breathing life into this magical story of jealousy, love and redemption. Part family drama, part fairytale, The Winter’s Tale is the perfect play for a summer’s evening.
Convincing himself of his wife’s infidelity, Leontes, King of Sicilia, is driven into a jealous rage. Unmoved by theentreaties of his queen and a proclamation from the Oracle of Apollo, the King tears his family apart.
The disastrous consequences of Leontes’ actions reverberate across generations and national borders. Only his daughter, Perdita, left for dead in the wilds of Bohemia in her infancy, survives to redeem the tale.
Globe performance on 11 August at 7.30pm.
