"You are welcome, take your place" The Merchant of Venice Act 4, Scene 1

The Globe is an open house for all. Globe Education’s Community Projects are for the people who work, live and learn in the London borough of Southwark, the home of the Globe. We are committed to making Southwark a place where every member of the community can have and meet high expectations from Globe Education.

Community is a sense of belonging and the potential to be inspired together. The relationship between the Southwark community, Shakespeare’s stories and the Globe is that we share this space, this air, these streets, these stories and the possibilities contained within the wooden ‘O’ as a common bond that has the capacity to draw us together in the midst of our diversity.

"It has always been the policy – from its inception – for the Globe to be an integral part of Southwark and it’s people" Sam Wanamaker

Our founder, Sam Wanamaker, passionately believed that the Globe should be rooted in its community and in the power of the arts as a force for change to transform communities. This inspires all of our work; that Shakespeare and the Globe should extend beyond our building, beyond schools and into the streets and homes of Southwark.
Southwark has changed enormously since the 1970’s when Sam first started working here. The borough is constantly evolving and is home to hundreds of diverse communities. Our challenge today is to engage with all sectors of the community.

Everyone has the right to engage with creativity and the arts, to try out new things and to have access to the theatre. Southwark Community Projects provide the opportunities that broaden people’s horizons, by raising people’s confidence, self-esteem and aspirations, empowering the individuals who take part to become agents of their own learning, developing imagination and individuality.

The arts can address the whole person without prejudice, challenging a person’s sense of themselves, their limits and their potential, providing a new environment for them to safely explore their identity, skills and abilities. The arts can help communities build relationships based on trust and respect through the nature of the creative process, creating community ownership and pride.

O, wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
That has such people in’t!
The Tempest Act 5, Scene 1

Each year Globe Education seeks to create new partnerships with Southwark schools and strengthen existing ones. We are also committed to finding new partners to support the extension of our work with the wider community of Southwark. For Project Information click here.
